this weekend fry's has a Philips Seismic Edge 5.1 channel sound card
for $20. I just built my g/f a computer and the lousy onboard sound
wont work. She will be playing games such as Warcraft III and No One
Lives Forever 2 and Diablo II. The sound card will be powering an
Altec Lansing ATP3 speakers (18 watt Subwoofer and two 6 watt
satellites, 12 total.) She wont be doing anything too great, just
playing games sometimes, and listening to mp3's. Will this card be
pretty good for her? Or are there some better alternative for no more
than 25 dollars?

Yes this card is a good one. It uses QSound 3D to send a stereo (or other)
sound source to 5.1 speakers, and is said to be pretty good at 3D Sound.

Alternatives for MP3 and Gaming include the Creative Labs Soundblaster
Audigy and Audigy 2 cards. The latter having a few more wizz bang features,
but not overly different from the Audigy. Creative invented EAX -and as such
generally have the best support for it in their cards.

The key to soundcards and games is Driver Support. Ensure it has good driver
support before you buy it.
